Dear Knee High Naturist Families,
Our Monday class had a vibrant morning by starting out our day with sidewalk chalk! Mrs. Rachel welcomed the young naturalist into our chalk garden. We added all of the essentials for a garden: the sun, worms, rain, flowers, roots, and butterflies. To take advantage of the warm day, we put on our backpacks and headed to the pavilion.
Incredibly, we have noticed our Knee High Naturalists learning more lyrics and hand motions to our good morning song! Here they are if you would like to sing at home:
Good morning, dear earth
(raise hand above head to form a circle)
Good morning, dear sun
(slowly lower hands wiggling your fingers)
Good morning, dear soil
(move hands in a circular motion towards the ground)
And beasts on the run
(put hands side by side and move like they are going up and down hills)
Good morning, dear flowers
(pretend to pick a flower and press on your cheek)
And birds in the trees
(interlace thumbs and flap your hands like a bird)
Good morning, to you
(point to the child/ group)
Good morning, to me
(Point to yourself)
We were so lucky to spot a contractor rolling past us in his excavator! It was a highlight of snack time. Mrs. Rachel explained how the machine helps make trails and that we can explore his hard work in a couple weeks. We waved to him as he rolled on by.
Creepy crawlies and wiggly worms were the theme of the day. Becoming insect investigators, we gathered natural materials to create a habitat for the plastic bug we picked out. Everyone had the chance to share with the class where they built their habitat, which bug they picked, and what materials they used. With our bugs safe in their homes, we read a bug book in the Eagles Nest.
Our spare time before pickup was spent well in the spider web and boat in the playscape. All Knee Highs gathered in the boat safely from the lingering spider-shark (a popular character this class’s imaginations have created)! With noon approaching, we picked up our yard cones, a favorite task of the group, and got our backpacks on. As we walked to the pickup spot, we added any last touches to our chalk garden before the Naturalists headed home.
We look forward to every moment of our Knee High Naturalist program. With the warmer weather, we are discovering more bugs in the dirt and buds on trees. Stay tuned for next week, we may find some amphibians and reptiles below our feet!
