Transition to Organic Partnership Program

The Grand Traverse Conservation District is now a partner of the Transition to Organic Partnership Program (TOPP).

TOPP is a USDA-funded, statewide mentorship program that connects new/transitioning organic farmers with certified organic producers. The TOPP mentorship program builds connections between experienced organic producers and producers transitioning to organic, supports the transition process, and creates a stronger network of organic producers across the United States.

For Mentees

Transitioning producers gain support, guidance, and development through mentorship. As a transitioning producer you will receive free mentorship from an experienced organic producer. Mentors and transitioning producers will work together to set goals for the mentorship year and will form a strong network of organic producers across the region.

For Mentors

Mentors play a crucial role in helping new organic producers succeed while growing the organic movement. As a mentor, you will have the opportunity to guide and support producers who are transitioning to organic, providing them with valuable insights, practical advice, and industry best practices. Mentorship training, time, and travel are paid. All crop and livestock producers are welcome to apply.

Why should I become organic certified?

Ultimately it is up to you to decide. However, becoming certified can open the door for new marketing opportunities and more customers. The “USDA Organic” label can be trusting too for consumers. Organic certification can also improve record keeping and help growers receive a premium cost for their goods.

Do I need to be committed to certification to participate?

Yes, enrolled mentees should be committed to transitioning to organic certification. However, if anything comes up and you want/need to drop out, we will work with you and your partner on the next step. You can also reach out to Sam Wallace (or any other TOPP techs) to learn more about if TOPP is the right fit for you.

Do I need to pay for this program? What costs are provided?

No! The program is free to join and voluntary for all involved. We provide $3,000 for mentors and $500 for mentees after completing 40 hours of mentorship.

Do I need to certify the entire property?

No! You can choose to certify one or more sections of your operation, if desired. Or you choose to certify the entire thing!

Is there a deadline to apply? I don’t have time or interest for this year, but would like to participate later once I know more.

We are accepting applications on a rolling basis. This is a multi-year program, so we can work with producers when their schedule best allows.

I don’t live in northern Michigan. Can I still join?

Yes! This is a statewide mentorship program, and we have farmers from the UP to Detroit. We also have TOPP technicians with the Washtenaw Conservation District and with MSU.

What type of practices are eligible for TOPP? How many acres do I need? Do I need to have an operation in place to participate?

The program welcomes farmers from all backgrounds, and encourages farmers of color, veterans, women, Spanish speakers, lower income farmers, and young and beginning farmers to apply. All crops, livestock species, and farm types qualify.

We would like to see an operation in place first (or at the very least, a space where they are currently growing crops or raising livestock). Participants can own, lease, or have an agreement with the landowner to use their property for organic production. This land can even include backyards.

What activities count towards the 40 hours?

To reach the required 40 hours, participants can include any of the following:

  • Phone calls and virtual meetings (Zoom, FaceTime, etc.).
  • Time spent reading and writing both texts and emails.
  • Site visits, including time spent driving to/from farms.
  • Workshops, trainings, and conferences attended together.
  • Time spent working on goal setting worksheet and organic system plans.

Who can I contact with questions?

Please contact Sam Wallace, our TOPP Technician with any questions about the program or to apply. He can be reached by phone at (231) 941-0960 x18 by email.
