Hello to one and all, welcome back to the best nature program of all! This week was filled with sunny rays and silly play, get out your sunglasses, take off your jacket and settle in to learn more about a day in the life of your Knee High Naturalists!
Filled with joy at the warmer weather, we all arrived with light jackets instead of sweaters. We were surprised with a big box of chalk that we used to color the boring sidewalk! It wasn’t long before pants, shirts and faces were all colors with chalk powder in many places. Once all of our friends arrived, we sang our Good Morning song and felt revived. Once in the pavilion we gathered round to hear about the solar system and how our Earth goes ‘round! We learned about the eight colorful planets near Earth and how some of them give the Sun a wider berth. Planets that are really far away are very cold, Earth is the only planet with liquid water—worth its weight in gold! To finish our lesson we got our very own planets and went through ten orbits—time flies when you’re having fun!
We observed the weather for today; a warm, sunny Spring day that is perfect for silly play! We washed our hands and devoured our food, the bright sun put us in a good mood. Rather than color and wait, we decided to play hide and seek and it was great. With huge boulders to hide behind, we kept playing and lost track of time! We all got cones and went for a walk to pick up interesting objects that made us gawk. We put of all of our objects on cyanotype paper to let the Sun give it a new make over! The power of the sun and its very cool rays made outlines of the things we picked up earlier today.
After our cool craft was done, bug time begun! We flipped every rock we could find to see who may be under there and if they were kind. We found many wiggling worms, at least twenty roly-poly’s, beetles, boxelder bugs and millipedes galore! We kept flipping rocks and logs, hoping to find more. Eventually we found ourselves in the nature playscape where we quickly transformed into spiders and as our imaginations took shape! It wasn’t long before it was time to go, so we gathered our cones and were ready to roll. Packing our bags gets easier and easier as the weather gets warmer and our layers get lighter. We gathered up our crafts and said farewell, looking forward to the next time we see each other—it’ll be swell!
Thank you all for another sunny and spectacular week in the lives of your Knee High Naturalists! We look forward to seeing you all next week to finally learn about wiggling worms and other incredible insects!
