KEY CHARACTERISTICS OF SPECIES:
Swamp White Oak – Grows in a pleasing rounded shape and makes a splendid shade tree. It prefers moist locations but has surprisingly good drought and compaction tolerance, making it ideal for planting in dry areas near water.
American Hazelnut – Useful both in landscapes and in naturalized settings, American hazelnut (Corylus americana) provides excellent food for wildlife. Small mammals depend on its mast crop of nuts, and its foliage supports a variety of interesting caterpillars that in turn feed birds.
Ninebark – Small, mounding shrub that grows quickly and supports a variety of birds, moths and butterflies. Ninebark got its name from its peeling bark, which some say has nine layers. The ability of ninebark to grow in harsh conditions makes it especially suitable for erosion control on banks.
American Plum – Spreading, thicket-forming shrub or small tree with showy white flowers and edible fruit that supports birds and pollinators.
Red Osier Dogwood – Recognized for its bright red winter stems, this shrub offers year-round interest and excellent cover and food for wildlife. Red-osier dogwood is useful for controlling erosion along stream banks.
