Basswood (Tilia americana), also known as American linden, is a medium-growing tree that reaches a mature height of 60–100 feet and a width of 25–40 feet. It thrives in sandy or loamy, well-drained soils with moderate moisture and can grow in full sun, partial shade, or shade. Known for its large, unequal heart-shaped leaves, basswood provides excellent shade and is a popular choice for forest or lawn plantings. In spring, its fragrant white flowers attract pollinators, while small, dry fruits with a flat “parachute” support a wide variety of wildlife.
