KEY CHARACTERISTICS OF SPECIES:

  • Red Osier Dogwood – Recognized for its bright red winter stems, this shrub offers year-round interest and excellent cover and food for wildlife. Red-osier dogwood is useful for controlling erosion along stream banks.

  • Choke Cherry – Tolerates a wide range of soil conditions. Fragrant spring blooms are followed by dark berries enjoyed by wildlife.

  • American Plum – Spreading, thicket-forming shrub or small tree with showy white flowers and edible fruit that supports birds and pollinators.

  • Meadowsweet – A compact flowering shrub producing clusters of soft white blooms that attract pollinators in early to mid-summer.

  • Pasture Rose – One of the most shade-tolerant roses, though it blooms the most in sun. Pink blooms and bright red hips persist into winter, providing food for birds.
