WHY CHOOSE THIS PACK?
Diverse growth habits
A mix of tall canopy trees and dense evergreens for layered visual interest and better wind protection.Year-round greenery
All species are evergreen, providing continuous color, screening, and habitat through every season.Cold-hardy and adaptable
These species are well suited for northern climates and perform well in a variety of soil types once established.
KEY CHARACTERISTICS OF SPECIES:
White Pine – Moderately shade tolerant and will grow in a variety of sites, though it prefers moist, sandy loam soils.
White Spruce – Moderately shade tolerant, but grows best in full sun. It does best on moist or dry sites, on clay, sand or loamy soils, but prefers a well-drained soil. The understory of older trees are often dominated by feather mosses and peat moss.
White Cedar – White cedar is shade tolerant; however, it grows best in full to partial sun. It prefers moist, well-drained organic soils and grows right down the the edges of lakes and rivers. It also grows well on dry, upland sites.
Balsam Fir – Attractive evergreen with dark green “flat and friendly” needles that are softer and not sharp like spruces, but provide similar excellent habitat benefits. Seedlings are shade-tolerant to start, but bolt quickly when a canopy opening appears.
Red Pine – Shade intolerant, red pine prefers full sun on a moist or dry site. It grows best on well-drained, sandy loam soil, making it an excellent tree for reforestation of poor, sandy sites.
