Hello one and all, welcome back to the best nature program of all! Keep digging to learn more about a fossil filled day in the life of your Knee High Naturalists.
A small class today, we arrived bundled up and ready to play! It didn’t take long for backpacks to come off and shovels to come out, we were on a big bug hunt and needed to scout. We found so many tiny little critters, some pill bugs (roly-poly), centipedes, snails and slugs—we loved them so much we wanted to give them tiny hugs! We were so entranced by our insect investigations that we started class late, our fondness for nature is something Ms. Miranda and Ms. Aspen can appreciate.
We sang our song and started our day learning about fossils and rocks in different stages. Fascinated by fossils and loving the rocks, we learned about Michigan’s past and wondered what it would be like if the oceans still covered that state, so vast! We examined fossils from different type of coral and learned that coral is actually an animal, not a plant—what do ya think of that? We saw remnants of leaves and crustaceans like snails, we loved everything so much that we held onto them instead of putting them back in the pail! With our fossil fun done, we washed our hands and devoured our bites before playing outside and climbing to greater heights. We’ve all been very interested in bouldering recently and spent a great deal of time scrambling over our favorite rocks, playing on and around them before taking off in a flock.
Today was a little different than normal, our hike was shorter and less formal. We decided to become spiders and quickly ascended our giant spider web, trying to repair holes and capturing food before it fled. Some of us discovered a very cool boat that rocks, but doesn’t float. We then became anglers, looking for giant tuna and sharks below, rocking the boat to and fro! Again, we changed pace and suddenly there were Spidermen everywhere, trying to protect our web from any threats in the air. We made a small “fire” and found special sticks that become our vehicles to ride around super quick. All too soon, it was time for us to go home, so we packed up our bags and stashed our sticks so the next time we have class, we can grab them quick!
Thank you all for another wonderful week in the lives of your Knee High Naturalists, we had so much fun exploring fossils and rocks with your children, letting their imaginations run wild. We look forward to seeing you all next week to learn about wiggling worms and other amazing insects!
