Hello one and all, welcome back to the best nature program of all! We all readjusted to the temperature change and fresh snowfall this morning, keep reading to learn more about what a day in the life of a Knee High Naturalist Looks like!
With a winter chill in the air and snow in our hair, we quickly got work with snow paint everywhere! Our snail eggs were too cold to check on, so we raked and scraped until everyone arrived. Not used to the cold after such nice weather, we all got pretty cold, even with sweaters! We quickly packed up, to the pavilion we went, to learn about spring things to a great extent!
We learned about buds and bugs, pollen and pollinators, tadpoles, eggs and more! Soon, our pollinators, like butterflies and bees, will be returning to collect pollen on places like their knees. With birds coming back and chirps in the air, we might soon find eggs in nests everywhere! We even got to see birch buds called catkins that hold pollen and release it in the wind. We performed a small flower dissection on last year’s growth from our pollinator garden—we blew on the fluffs to disperse the seeds and counted 23 on that laid on one friend from their head to their feet! Tomorrow is the Spring Equinox, you see, so we learned all about it so we can celebrate it with glee. For the last time until December, our season for today was winter!
We washed our hands and gobbled up our snacks, a few friends eager to make a wintry trek. Not used to the cold anymore, some friends played outside and some friends stayed in the warm to color some more. Some friends used the snow paint and made colorful puddles, while others used crayons and marks to make beautiful doodles. Finally, we agreed, it was time to sled, so we packed up our toys and headed to the shed. With spring in our minds, we hopped like bunnies, swam like otters and flew like birds on our way the sleds!
We were so kind, taking turns and sharing sleds if other naturalists needed them instead. We all went down, one by one, screaming and laughing because it was so fun! The cold didn’t bother us then, we kept running back up the hill, excited to go again. Some friends rode together and some rode alone, we all were so excited we forgot about going home! Soon we got a little chilly so we restacked our sleds and took a tour of the nature center and cool animals instead. We learned about bears, martens, badgers, foxes, rabbits and more before we went back outside to a place with no doors. We ended the day with silly snow play, raking and scraping until there were ponds all over the place! Our families were excited to see us today, they always want to learn about the different ways we played!
Thank you all for the last wonderful day of winter with your Knee High Naturalists! We had so much fun playing in the snow, though I think we’re ready for it to go…we will not have classes next week due to TCAPS Spring Break, we will miss you all and wish you a relaxing week off!
