Fall Knee High Naturalists - Week 6 (Wednesday)

We kept ourselves busy this morning! We started the morning reading about dinosaurs and finding fossils in the Nature Center. We learned that birds today are related to the dinosaurs that lived long ago! Ms. Paige asked us if we would want a dinosaur for a pet…we decided they might be just a bit too big to fit in our houses! After snack, we climbed mountains (rocks), threw leaves in the air, and solved a puzzle. Speaking of puzzles, we wondered what the little white “feathers” floating through the air were. Upon closer inspection of the garden, we discovered that they were not feathers, but seeds from a milkweed plant. We popped open a couple seed pods and watched in awe as they were picked up by the wind, flying away. Later in the morning, we even found a milkweed bug that likes to munch on milkweed seeds. We talked about another insect that likes milkweed–monarchs. When it was time to hike, we entered the Pine Forest in search of mushrooms, where we found many. They were harder to find this week after so many pine needles fell, but we discovered that almost every bump in the forest floor was a mushroom growing under needles and leaves. This turned into a fun game of whether or not we would uncover mushrooms. On our hike, we collected leaves of all colors and sorted them into a rainbow at the pavilion. We had just enough time to climb the spider web and run down the tunnel on the Nature Playscape before coming inside for pick up.
