Fall 2023 Knee High Naturalists | Week 7

Welcome one and welcome all, to the life a Knee High Naturalist, filled with magic from the first snowfall!

We started off another wonderful morning outdoors, crawling through the snow on all fours. Snowballs were made, snow games were played and snow treats even tasted homemade! We gathered for our morning meeting and sang loudly in a great, warm greeting. We tweeted and hooted, making our best bird calls, then we learned that they migrate in late fall. When it starts to get cold and temperatures drop, the birds eat a lot and head south in a flock!

Like a group of birds in flight to somewhere warm, we headed to the pavilion for snack in a swarm. Handwashing was different today, we learned when our mittens can come off and when they should stay! We put away our backpacks and gobbled up our snacks, excited for our big bird day and first session of snow play. Soon, hats and mittens littered the floor as we decorated our binoculars we would use to explore. Before we could begin our trek, we got redressed until we felt warm and perfect!

With fresh snow all around and covering the ground, it was hard to resist not eating it by the pound! As we started our hike, we discovered squirrel tracks and squealed in delight. Navigating snowy stairs and trails with ease, we soon found a wood pecker, pecking on the trees! We started to get cold so we hiked to the pavilion where Ms. Rachel had warm packets to hold. After we felt nice and toasty, we headed to the sledding hill to play until our cheeks were rosy. Some friends tried to sled and some just played, some rolled down the hill like logs instead!

Soon, it was time to for class to end, so we gathered all of our gear and said goodbye to our friends. Our families were all waiting to catch up, so we ended our day there, excited to be picked up!

Thank you all for another neat week in the life of a Knee High Naturalist, we look forward to seeing you next week for another fantastic day of outdoor play!
