Rain, rain, please don’t go away so we have puddles where we can splash and play! Welcome back to another wonderful and wet week of being a Knee High Naturalist.
We had our second entirely outdoors class, no windows, no walls, just lots of owl calls! We started off our day under the trees where we we raked leaves and dug until we all had dirt on our knees. Ms. Miranda had pumpkins of all sizes and colors, squirmy wormies were discovered and we shared our cool finds with one another.
We all sat on the blanket and listened to “Spider, Spider” by Joy Cowley—we learned that they have eight legs and make sticky webs to trap their prey! We sang our song, washed our hands and ate snack until it was all gone, then we got to make our very own spiders and webs! Some friends had blue webs and some had red, some spiders had one eye and some had so many they didn’t all fit on their head. When our crafts were done, we got on our rain jackets and ran to the woods to have fun!
On our hike we all got to run, back and forth, back and forth until we had enough fun and found some cool forts. With shovels and rakes in tow, we crouched down low and dug lots of holes—a fire pit for roasting marshmallows here, a worm finding spot over there, we all had rain in our hair and didn’t have any cares!
Some friends climbed trees and cheered with glee as they acted like birds perched above you and me. We had bear rangers on duty today, they made sure that the bear (Ms. Aspen) was ready to play—the bear roared and we ran, screaming and laughing as loud as we can. Later we made animal sounds like owl calls and wolf howls that could be heard all around!
When our day was done, we were exhausted from so much fun. We splashed in puddles, we muddled around the soil and soaked up the rain; maybe so much that our adults will need to let our shoes drain! We had a wet and wonderful day outdoors, we don’t miss our windows, walls or doors.
Thank you all for another spectacular week in the life of a Knee High Naturalist, we had so much fun making rainy days a positive outdoor experience. We look forward to seeing you all next week to learn about animal sounds and maybe even see a few flakes of snow!
