Winter/Spring 2024 Knee High Naturalists | Monday, Week 1

Good morning one and all, welcome to the best nature program of all! We have officially begun Winter/Spring 2024 sessions of Knee High Naturalists and are off to an amazing start. Sit back and dive into the life of your Knee High Naturalists!

In the crisp morning air, friends began to arrive and played in pairs. Old friends and new friends alike excitedly grabbed snow paint and rakes to start their day—it seems like they could get used to this kind of play! After all of our Knee High Naturalists arrived, we picked up our toys and gathered to learn the Good Morning song with joy. Our seasoned naturalists helped our new friends learn the words and the motions, we were filled with happy emotions! After our song ended, we packed up and headed to our splendid pavilion!

We stacked our backpacks on the front picnic table and gathered on the blanket as quickly as we were able. We learned about our morning routine and read a book about a little mouse trying to find a cozy winter nook! We soon lined up to wash our hands and settled in to eat snacks with all of our friends. It wasn’t long before we discovered the pavilion was so warm that we need get uncovered! Soon hats and mittens littered the space, we laughed and colored happily all over the place.

We learned to listen for Ms. Miranda and Ms. Aspen’s little maracas, this means, “All eyes on us!” We’re quick learners and had fun practicing before we gathered for a round of the Name Game. We discovered that many of us like hot dogs, corn dogs and mac and cheese! After learning each other’s names and favorite foods, we played a game that let us express our moods. With all of our icebreaking done, we decided to hit the Sabin trail for snowy winter fun!

We learned about line leaders, hats and gloves, then we took off into the forest that we love. We all brushed our boots, learned about owls and gave our best hoots. We wound through the forest until we arrived at our secret spot covered in trees that we like to climb a lot! Soon our White pine tree was filled with tree frogs, excitedly chirping and climbing before coming back down to play a round of tag. It wasn’t long before it was time to head back, this time we decided to make our own tracks. Through the pine trees we crept into an open field with snow so white and sun so bright that we squealed in delight! Impossible to resist, we started flopping down to make snow angels and roll around on the ground. After a few minutes of sampling snow and rolling to and fro, we continued our journey because it was time to go. With our bags all packed and drawings put away, we head back to our morning spot to play. Our families were waiting, ready to take us home and so proud of us for coming to school alone!

Thank you all for a spectacular and snow filled first week of Knee High Naturalists! We were so impressed with both our new and old Knee Highs, their easy transition into the outdoor classroom and excitement to play together. We can’t wait to see you all next week to learn about terrific trees!
