theme: winged things (and snakes)
We talked a bit about winged things today! Ms. Paige read us Stellaluna by Janell Cannon about a baby fruit bat who is separated from her mother and raised by a family of birds. You can watch/listen to the story with your naturalist(s) by clicking the video link below. We even got a chance to pass around the bat skeleton from the Nature Center! We noticed that bats have bones that look like fingers, but they are really long and make up their wings. We also noted that bat wings look different from bird and butterfly wings because they are covered in skin rather than feathers or scales.
After snack, we climbed a giant snow pile (Mt. Boardman) behind the pavilion! We took turns climbing up and sliding down in very creative ways. We probably could have played here all day. We were having so much fun! While we were climbing the mountain, Ms. Paige set up a craft we have been looking forward to for quite some time now. Our class loves to pretend there are snakes on our heads, so we made our very own snakes today out of paper plates. While we were coloring our snakes, Ms. Rachel told us about Popcorn, a corn snake she used to work with at a state park in Virginia
After crafting, we only had a few minutes left to explore outside before it was time to go home. We ventured over to the Nature Playscape, where we pretended to be spiders and tested our balancing skills. We found that the mud kitchen’s water table was full of ice that looked like shattered glass. We are eagerly awaiting warm weather so the mud kitchen can have running water again! Until then, the melting snow will have to supply the mud.
