Fall Knee High Naturalists - Week 4 (Wednesday)

We saw snow this morning! We spent a little time inside the Nature Center learning about the animals along the walls. We got to feel the feathers of hawks, an owl, a duck, and a loon. We also looked at the otter’s webbed feet and beaver’s teeth and found a woodpecker high up on a branch. Outside the pavilion, we found woodpecker holes in the trees! After snack, we kept warm at the pavilion putting together a puzzle and coloring. Then, we set off on Sabin Trail to look for mushrooms. We found at least eight different kinds. Big, small, tiny, white, brown, black, purple, orange, yellow–we had a wonderful time comparing them all. Ms. Paige used her phone to identify some of them–the app Seek by iNaturalist is incredibly helpful when we do not know what something is on the trail. Some mushrooms were bigger than Ms. Paige’s and Ms. Rachel’s hands! These were called sweetbread mushrooms. Some of the smaller mushrooms reminded us of pancakes, so we are calling them pancake mushrooms from now on! These are false chanterelles. We also learned to wipe our shoes off on the boot brush at the trailhead to avoid spreading seeds when we hike on other trails.
