ABOUT THE NORTHWEST MICHIGAN INVASIVE SPECIES NETWORK:
The Northwest Michigan Invasive Species Network (ISN) is an organization consisting of over forty partners, serving Benzie, Grand Traverse, Leelanau, and Manistee counties. The mission of ISN is to protect, enhance, and promote northwest Michigan’s natural communities through terrestrial invasive plant management and outreach. ISN’s fiduciary is the Grand Traverse Conservation District, which is a community-serving organization that cares for the people and places that make Northwest Michigan so special — our local farms, our schools, and our exquisite rivers, lakes and natural areas.
Position Title: ISN Volunteer
Purpose: The position of ISN Volunteer is a crucial part of ISN’s direct terrestrial plant management. Working primarily at annual work bees, volunteers provide hands-on assistance with the removal of high-priority invasive plant species.
Location: ISN Volunteers work in various locations. Events and work bees are held in all four counties (Benzie, Grand Traverse, Leelanau, and Manistee). Volunteers are able to choose which location they prefer, depending on their own availability.
Key Responsibilities:
Assist ISN staff and partners with the removal of invasive plant species.
Demonstrate safe usage of equipment and ability to follow guidance of those leading the work bee.
Responsible To: ISN Staff and Partner organizations (if applicable).
Time Commitment: Varies; typical work bee is two hours, with time after for refreshments and socializing.
Qualifications: Pleasant manner, patience, able-bodied, and willing to learn plant identification.
Support: Training for this position will be provided. In addition, the staff will be available for questions and assistance.
