Steve was born and raised in Traverse City, Michigan. He attended the University of Montana, where he received a B.S. degree in Wildlife Biology (Honors Program) in 1990.

As a student, he began his work at the City of Traverse City’s Brown Bridge Quiet Area and on the Boardman River in 1988, studying the river and its impact on the Brown Bridge reservoir. He conducted the original erosion inventory on the Boardman, where he documented over 600 erosion sites which were 85% the result of human activity.

Steve started with the Grand Traverse Conservation District in 1992, and has restored or assisted in the restoration of over 250 erosion sites, including the repair of over 40 road/stream crossings.

Steve completed Michigan State University’s Michigan Natural Shoreline Partnership training in 2011, and is a MNSP Certified Professional. He is also a 2009 graduate of MSU’s Great Lakes Leadership Academy’s Emerging Leaders Program.

Steve has received numerous awards recognizing his stewardship work on the Boardman River, including the Clarence Kroupa Award given by the Northern Michigan Environmental Action Council, and the Frank Purvis Stewardship Award in 2009, the highest award given by the Grand Traverse County Planning Commission. He was also selected as National Trout King for Kalkaska’s 68th National Trout Festival in 2004.
