American elm (Ulmus americana) was frequently the dominant or co-dominant species in many of its primary native habitats - floodplains and bottomlands - prior to the introduction of Dutch Elm Disease. This species does not naturally occur in stands but can be found mixed in with the likes of balsam fir and yellow birch. American elm is beloved for its wide, shade providing canopy.

DID YOU KNOW?

  • Dutch elm disease, first discovered in the United States in the 1930’s (Michigan in the 1950’s), is an invasive fungal disease thought to have originated in Asia. The disease was able to spread quickly and cause a significant amount of damage partly because management efforts were put on hold during WWII.
