Description: Join us for our June community science project: “Bugs Don’t Bug Me!” by helping GTCD staff monitor stream health by surveying for aquatic macroinvertebrates.
Are you interested in science? Protecting our beautiful watersheds? All things creepy and crawly? Join GTCD for our stream monitoring community science event and do all three! Aquatic macroinvertebrates are small animals and insects without backbones that live in the water for part of or all of their lifecycle. These critters are excellent bioindicators of pollution and other matters of concern for our waters. By completing a stream survey, we provide crucial information to scientists who can determine if further testing or work is needed to protect stream health.
What should I expect from this experience?
During this ~2 hour event, you can expect:
-To participate in a state-wide community science initiative
-To see, touch, and learn to identify many kinds of macroinvertebrates
-To learn more about insect life cycles
How will this event work?
The event will be broken into stages, you can stay for all or part of the event.
Stage 1: Stream sampling with dip nets
Stage 2: Macroinvertebrate identification
Stage 3: Data recording and calculating Robin’s Creek water quality
All ages welcome!
When: Wednesday, June 22nd from 12:00 - 2:00pm
Where: Robins Creek - Natural Education Reserve. Meet at the Meadows Pavilion Trailhead
