Domestic Drinking Water Well Screening

April 8, 2017 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

The Grand Traverse Conservation District and the Michigan Agriculture Environmental Assurance Program (MAEAP) are holding a FREE domestic drinking water well screening on Saturday, April 8, 2017 from 10:00am to 12:00pm at the Boardman River Nature Center.

The screening is for nitrates and nitrites, and is open to everyone who uses a personal well for drinking water (no public water supplies or non-drinking water sources). More information is available by calling 941-0960.

The directions for collecting a sample are:
1. Pick a tap that supplies water that has not run through any treatment devices (water softener, carbon filter, etc.). An outdoor faucet often works well. The kitchen or bathroom faucet will work if not able to access outdoor faucet.
2. Run the water for 10-20 minutes before collecting the sample. Disconnect any hoses before collecting the sample; do not sample through a hose. Rinse the sample bottle and lid (Mason jar, water bottle, Tupperware, etc) thoroughly in the water to be sampled; then fill and cap the bottle.
3. Label the bottle clearly with your name, the sampling date, and the well name (cottage well, Mom’s well, etc.) using a waterproof pen.
4. Keep the sample dark and cold (on ice or refrigerated) until it is brought in on April 8.

Screening will take ~1 minute.
