9/20 – Above and Below the Garden

This week the Knee-High Naturalists explored all things in the Garden. We practiced taking turns during our group conversation about what grows in a garden and then read Up in the Garden and Down in the Dirt by Kate Messner. In the book, we discovered that there is so much life during all season of a garden. We used this as inspiration for our art project where we painted with dirt on our carrots.

The rain did not scare us from going outside! We set out on our hike. First, we visited the garden to pick Basil leaves and used our sense of smell to discover what was still left in the garden. We stopped to notice some fungus growing on logs. We learned that the orange fungus was called Witches Butter. We ended our day with a very long hike where we discovered a natural spring that was named “fairy falls” by all our friends.
