Balsam fir is a Native Species popular for use as Christmas trees, because the needles do not shed easily and the tree is aromatic. It is highly shade tolerant and resistant to drought. This is a good tree for wildlife habitat and erosion control on streambanks or upper shorelines. It is especially good for cover in winter for birds and mammals.
Balsam Fir tolerates cold pockets, but is sensitive to salt and soil compaction.
