Salon Owner Helps GTSI Students Paint Michigan Symbols

David Mayor is the owner of Salon Stage on Front Street in Traverse City, but he recently offered GTSI students much more than his talent in the art of hair design. David shared his passion for drawing and painting with Kim Ranger’s class at Mill Creek Elementary.

During two classroom visits, David  worked with small groups of  third graders to create four paintings depicting symbols of Michigan including sand dunes, sailing on the lakes, lighthouses, and the Mackinaw Bridge.

During the painting workshops David taught students about color choices, brush strokes, and even helped them practice their Spanish.

In May, the paintings will be installed as the backdrop for the Mill Creek Elementary Native Plants Garden just in time for their Garden Tour and book signing, all a part of the Mill Creek GTSI student’s Stewardship Project this year.
