From growing up in southeast Michigan to living in the Upper Peninsula, Tom is a whole-hearted Michigander! He graduated from Northern Michigan University (NMU) with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Geography while minoring in Earth Science. He also attended a Natural Resource program at Vermilion Community College in Ely, Minnesota.
Tom’s work experiences have provided him with an array of skill sets. As a biological technician at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, he restored coastal dune and near shore ecosystems. He participated in the sea lamprey control program throughout the Great Lakes region with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife. With The Nature Conservancy, he contributed in fire restoration management practices. As a hydrologic technician with the Ottawa National Forest, he restored riparian habitats. While attending NMU, he worked with the Marquette Downtown Development Authority implementing improvement projects to the downtown area and facilities. Always enjoying getting his hands dirty, he also worked as a landscaper over multiple years.
Whether for leisure or work, by paddle or foot, Tom loves exploring and is continually intrigued by the great outdoors! From the beach side to the mountain tops, he seeks adventure. He enjoys to travel and experience culture but more than anything else, he loves doing all these things, or just simply relaxing, with his wife and son by his side.
