Chris Olsen brings a full toolbox of experience to the newly created position of Food Safety Technician.
Armed with a B.S. degree in Food Science and Human Nutrition from Michigan State University, Chris started her career with Kellogg’s working on new product start-ups, packaging and technology development. After leaving Kellogg’s, she went back to MSU to pursue a Master’s degree in Advertising and Public Relations, which then propelled her into her next job as manager of New Product Promotions at Cherry Marketing Institute. It was here that Chris began her alliance with agriculture through the Michigan Cherry Committee and cherry growers from across the country. One favorite project was a joint effort between tart cherry growers, Michigan Sugar, Meijer’s, and Kinross Correctional Facility to produce cherry pies for distribution through Second Harvest in Detroit. The successful venture received recognition on the Michigan Senate floor.
A new position as a marketing and salesperson with a fruit cooperative, brought Chris to Northern Michigan. In addition to tart and sweet cherries, she sold blueberries, apples, cranberries, peaches, mango, papaya, raspberries, asparagus, Brussels sprouts, squash, carrots and pumpkin to food manufacturers and distributors throughout North America. Visits with growers and manufacturers took her all over the U.S. and Canada, presenting an up-close opportunity to see their operations and develop close relationships.
Outside of the office, she enjoys traveling, all things food-related, playing golf, new restaurants, reading, road tripping in Northwest Michigan and anything in the Keweenaw.
