Matthew Bertrand joined the Grand Traverse Conservation District as the Invasive Species Specialist in October 2010. Previously, he worked on crews in SE Michigan managing invasive species in some of Michigan’s most sensitive habitats. As a two-term AmeriCorps member in Tucson, AZ, he led regular service projects with youth and adults building native plant landscapes, raingardens, food gardens, and greywater systems. During his service, he helped found a community cooperative through which homeowners worked together to enhance their home landscapes for the environment. In 2006, Matthew received his BA in Literature, with minors in history and computer science, from Arizona State University. He became active in environmental and resource management issues based on his experiences living and traveling in South America, from the Galápagos to Tierra del Fuego. Matthew enjoys gardening, tending chickens, and playing guitar.
