July 21st – Conservation

Hey campers and parents! Thanks for a fantastic first day of camp. We learned all about conservation today, but started our morning by making fun adventurer hats of our favorite Michigan animal. There were a few bobcats among us, some turtles and owls, even a wolf!! To start off our lesson, we had an activity that focused on water conservation. We learned that humans consume a lot of water from a number of different sources, and we thought up ideas on how to save water at home. Afterward, we made a solar oven that harnessed the energy of the sun to cook our snack-s’mores! Then we learned about Leave No Trace from Robbie the raccoon and went on an “un-natural hike” where we tried to identify garbage that had been hidden along the trail. We adopted small squares of land to observe and record throughout the week, noting bugs or leaves or flowers within them. Finally we ate our snack and cooled off with a scavenger hunt in the Nature Center’s gallery.

Remember that we will be swimming tomorrow morning, so WEAR your swimsuits to camp!! We will be leaving on our field trip shortly after everyone arrives. See you tomorrow!
