10/4 Seed Celebration

The cold Fall air brought a new level of excitement to class today. We started our day practicing teamwork and problem-solving. We worked as a group to complete a puzzle and found that seeds make a unique noise in plastic cups. We made seed shakers and used our sense of hearing to discover when things are added it changes the sound.

In our book Porcupine’s Seed by Viji K. Chary, we met a porcupine who was trying hard to grow a sunflower. We learned that seeds need sun, soil, and water to grow. We finished our snack and headed outside.

On our hike, we took some playdough, so we could create our  own porcupine with items found in nature. After checking on the construction work, we took a vote and decided to venture to fairy falls. Our group worked together to help everyone venture into the creak and climb over the big tree. We discovered that the creek has different depths and that the bank is not always stable. Our sense of smell told us that we stumbled upon some mint.

Once inside, we warmed up and created our own sunflowers! Some decided to play with the construction toys in the dirt. It was a great week and we are working together to create a unique learning community.
